Tips for Group Exercise Class Participants

We come back together in shared physical spaces to exercise, practice yoga, or meditate in groups. Let’s be extra mindful of how to do that safely and effectively. Here are some tips on how to be the best possible group fitness class participant, in the wake of COVID-19:

Before You Come to Class

  • Stay home if you’re sick.

  • Avoid fragrances and perfumes (it can aggravate those with sensitivities).

  • Maintain good hygiene.

  • If you have allergies, take preventive measures to minimize snottiness, face-touching, and nose blowing during class.

  • Bring your own mat, sweat towel, and equipment. Come prepared!

  • Give yourself time before class to use the restroom, blow your nose, clean your mat, and wash your hands.

During Exercise Class

  • Participate in class at your own risk and listen to your body.

  • Clean the mat thoroughly prior to use, if you borrow one.

  • Only touch a prop if you plan to use it and can commit to cleaning it properly afterward (block, strap, mat, etc). Use of shared equipment is at your own risk.

  • Be mindful of your surroundings and respect other people’s personal space.

  • Follow social distancing recommendations and keep mats 6 feet away from the nearest person.

  • If you need to cough or sneeze:

    • Step outside of the room (when possible).

    • Cover mouth and nose with a tissue, then throw used tissue in the trash.

    • Cough or sneeze into your elbow (not your hands), if a tissue isn’t handy.

  • Face the same direction as other participants.

  • Be cautious. Be conscientious. Everyone has a different comfort level in groups.

After Your Exercise Class

  • Clean mat thoroughly after use, if you borrowed one. Air dry (not in direct sunlight) before rolling up and storing.

  • Clean all shared equipment (resistance bands, blocks, and straps) after use.

  • Put everything back where it belongs.

  • Wash your hands after class. At a minimum, use hand sanitizer on the way out.

  • Clean your own yoga mat regularly (here’s how).

Follow these tips to maximize comfort and safety for you, other participants, and the instructor!

Stay safe, have fun, and be well.
